Below is the full text of the James Connolly Society’s New Year statement.
The James Connolly Society extends New Year greetings to our activists, members and supporters. We offer solidarity greetings to political prisoners throughout the world and the organisations we have worked with over the last 12 months. 2015 has been an incredible year for the JCS. Packed with activism and political development. 2016 promises more of the same.
The centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising offers all of us an opportunity to learn from the determination, commitment and sacrifice of the revolutionaries who took on the British Empire and set a course which changed Ireland and these islands forever. It is vital when revisiting those revolutionary events that we maintain their integrity and draw the correct political conclusions.
2016 also marks the 30th anniversary of the annual James Connolly commemoration in Edinburgh. All those who have contributed to this remarkable achievement over the decades should rightly take pride in what we have built. A political organisation committed to Connolly’s politics, based in working class communities and led by the working class in Connolly’s home city.
While it is clear that 2016 will be a year of reflection and commemoration, it must also be a year of rededication to the political principles of James Connolly. For the James Connolly Society this means commitment to our ‘Return to Connolly’ strategy which focusses on Connolly’s life, not his death. In order to build political strength and make Connolly’s politics relevant in 2016 we must look to the future. Nostalgia and wishful thinking will get us nowhere.
Over the last 30 years the James Connolly Society has consistently shown principle, discipline and leadership. We have time and again displayed our ability to adapt to a changing political landscape. 2016 will be a year of transformation for the James Connolly Society as we continue to resist the exploitation and domination of capitalism and demand recognition of James Connolly as a figure of international significance and a son of Edinburgh.
On January 1st 1916 James Connolly wrote ‘opportunities are for those that seize them…… the coming year may be as bright as we choose to make it’. The James Connolly Society is determined to seize the opportunities that 2016 will bring. We urge others to be inspired by the men and women of 1916 and to play their part in building the society envisaged in the 1916 Proclamation. There has never been a better time to become politically active. There has never been a better time to join the James Connolly Society.
